Bel-Kon Kennels was originally built in 1952 by John and Maybelle Konrad on Frontage Rd. in unincorporated Darien. Mr. Konrad was a well-known trainer and breeder in addition to a premier kennel operator. Mrs. Konrad was very good at the business and organizational side of operating a kennel. For the times, the kennels were state-of-the-art and served the community well for many years. After many years of successful operation, the Konrads moved to Sister Bay, Wisconsin where they opened a small boarding kennel.
CQ Querrey purchased the kennel from the Konrads in April of 1981. CQ, a true, blue dog lover and successful businessman had always wanted to own and operate a kennel. When Bel-Kon Kennels became available, CQ jumped at the opportunity to realize his dream.
Being able to live on the premises gave CQ the chance to make numerous improvements to the grounds and facilities, which, at the time was 30 years old. Jay, CQ’s oldest son, thoroughly enjoyed work at the kennels and became CQ’s right hand man. A dog lover like his father, Jay took sincere interest in caring for the pets and maintaining the kennels.
Jay followed his father’s footsteps. He attended college at Western Illinois University and earned his Bachelors Degree. After graduating, he immediately went to work for Bel-Kon Kennels and has been there ever since. When CQ chose to retire in 2000, Jay jumped at the opportunity to take over Bel-kon Kennels and keep the business in the family.
Jay realized right away, that at 50 years old, the kennels needed updating. He began researching how to best update the kennels and came to the realization that tearing down the old kennel and rebuilding was the best option. Having grown up working at the kennels, Jay had an abundance of ideas of how to improve the new building. A large amount of money was invested in the kennel and the property, and the remodeling was designed around the comfort of the pets and the ability to efficiently keep the kennels clean and sanitary.
As a result, Bel-Kon Kennels is a 5,000 square foot facility, matched by none in the area. It sits on 2 acres of fenced in land ideal for playtime and training. There is a large indoor area for playtime and training during the winter months and rainy days. You will not find a nicer facility or a staff more dedicated to boarding pets in a safe, clean, comfortable and spacious environment.
